“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”
— Dr. Seuss, I Can Read with My Eyes Shut!
Grab a book and read. Read to be entertained, to learn something, and escape for awhile.
My parents read stories to me so often I could recite them as they turned the pages as if I were reading. Besides the Hardy Boys and the Sugar Creek Gang series, Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel DeFoe, was my favorite book growing up. It’s not the book my parents read to me. Here are other books I’ve loved:
- Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
- A Prayer For Owen Meany by John Irving
- My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok
- The Promise of Jesse Woods by Chris Fabry
Of course, the all time best selling book is the Holy Bible. The story of an abandoned Creator who wouldn’t go away. Its build up, arrival, and finishing work of Jesus Christ point the way back to God. Even for non-followers of Jesus, it’s still good to be familiar with the Bible—it’s shaped so much of Western Civilization and shows up in literature more often than we realize.
