The LORD is God,
and he has made his light shine on us.
With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession
up to the horns of the altar. (Psalm 118:27)
Have you stumbled in the night trying to find the light switch in a dark, unfamiliar room? I have as I groped with outstretched arms, hoping to feel something to orient myself.
That, for me, pictures a world without God. It’s especially true today as we face fear and unwelcome adjustments in a worldwide pandemic. Though we may try to dim the uncertainty with well-meaning entertainment, they are only distractions. So, we grope.
Truth is, the Bible is the story of an abandoned Creator who wouldn’t go away. He felt our rejection, disdain, even ambivalence. Yet, He didn’t turn his back on His petulant children and start a less resistant project to occupy His eternal attention span.
Instead, He flipped the light switch on for us. He sent Jesus to live and die at our hands — to woo us back to Himself.
His Light Shines, It’s Our Choice
How each of us responds to the light is our choice. We can continue stumbling around or humbly accept His goodness and enjoy His friendship and guidance through life’s unpredictability.
Psalm 118:27 beckons us to join the festal procession because the light shines again, not just in the world but in the dark parts of our hearts. This may be an unusual Easter season in our quarantined world. But the fact remains, the light came and continues to shine.
In short, are you still groping? If you haven’t found the light switch yet, you can. Here is a simple prayer you can pray from the last message Billy Graham delivered:
Dear Heavenly Father,
I know that I am a sinner.
And I ask for your forgiveness.
I believe you have died for my sins,
And rose from the dead.
I turn from my sins. I repent of my sins.
I invite you to come into my heart and life.
I want to trust and follow you as my Lord and Savior.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
