I waited patiently for the Lord;
he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit,
out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock
and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord
and put their trust in him.
–Psalm 40:1-3
Whether David cried out from the weight of a guilty conscience or under duress from his enemies’ attacks, he knew where to go. He cried to God and waited for His response.
He Turned to Me.
God did not cold-shoulder David, tell him to wait in line, or say, You’ve used up your lives like in a computer game.
He Heard My Cry.
While God kept the laws of gravity working, the universe spinning, and the sparrows fed, He still heard David’s cry.
He Set My Feet on a Rock.
He lifted David out of trouble and gave him sure footing so he wouldn’t slip back into it.
He Put a New Song in My Mouth.
He changed David’s outlook from despair to joy. One cannot sing and still be consumed by fear.
Many Will See.
Deliverance isn’t meant to be kept private. Others—also suffering in their own private hells—will see God’s glory and compassion, and they too will put their trust in Him.
Why could David wait patiently? Why did God show mercy? Because David was His child—a bond that could not be broken without God forfeiting His very nature.
Like a good parent, God cares deeply for you and me. But that’s not all. His deliverance overflows to those around us.
When you call upon God, others will too.
